Wasting time is easy as we go through the endless checking of emails, social media sites, mobile alerts, and doing unimportant things. We kill time instead of getting our work done. At the end of the day, we feel unproductive as if we have not accomplished any important tasks.
It’s better to be real and face the ways we waste time.
Take some time to review everything you do in a day. As you review your daily activities, you’ll come to realize how much time you have wasted.
Recognize these common time wasters that take too much of our time.
1.Web Surfing
The Internet is the holy grail of all timewasters. Endless web surfing, checking the news, reading articles, etc. have become so natural. You start with reading news, then click on a link to an interesting article, which leads to another and then some more. Before you know it, you’ve spent hours browsing sites that are not even relevant to your core business.
2.Gadgets
Smartphones, mobile devices and other gadgets have become invaluable tools for the ability to be on top of everything. These gadgets keep on lighting up or making sounds to alert you to incoming calls, text messages, Facebook alerts, tweets, and so on. Constantly checking and responding to all those alerts can be really time-consuming.
3.Email
How many times do you check your business and personal emails each day? Not only does checking or replying to emails take a lot of your time, but it also takes your mind off the task at hand. That constant switch of action makes you lose focus, and it will take a while to regain your focus.
4.Negative People
They can be the drama queens, people who are impossible to please, those who complain too much, the manipulators, etc. Spending time with these people lowers your energy level. Avoiding them does not mean you hate them. Just be careful not to allow their negative attitudes to contain you. Or else your outlook, enthusiasm, and productivity will be affected.
Strategies to Become Productive
There are steps you can implement into your daily routine to help you add more hours to your day. Organization skills and time mastery skills, like planning and scheduling your activities can help increase your productivity.
1.Set daily accomplishment
There are days when you want to connect with your social media fans and followers. Other days, you need to sit down and work on a project. Or maybe, spend the day talking to suppliers, team members, and customers. Some days, you want to check your website and marketing campaigns.
All are great days. But every morning, set what kind of day you want to have. This allows you to set out your expectations and then move forward to accomplish them.
2.Set priorities
Make a to-do list. Write the tasks you have to accomplish each day. This way, you can prioritize tasks in order of importance so you can do the most urgent ones. Keep this list small and realistic. There are days when you’ll find it hard to focus, use those days to work on low-intensity tasks.
Also, keep a separate list of your weekly, monthly and yearly goals, that your daily tasks support.
3.Break things down
Divide your tasks into chunks. Large tasks on your list can be intimidating; these you may tend to procrastinate on and put aside until later. Grouping similar tasks together into smaller tasks can make things easier. It ensures that you complete the project before your energy runs out. It even makes your brain work faster. Just avoid shifting from one activity to another without finishing what you’re currently working on.
4.Have a schedule
Create a schedule to guide you in planning your day. Estimate how much time you will spend on each task. Stick to this schedule as much as you can, but you can still make minor adjustments if urgent issues come up.
Don’t forget to leave time for breaks throughout the day even if it’s just 15 minutes. Stepping away from your work area will make you work better than sitting all day long.
5.Get help from experts
There are online time management techniques that you can learn from. You can also connect with other entrepreneurs and business people to learn how they manage their time so you can use your time more efficiently.
