The interruptions log is a basic journal that keeps track of the distractions that occur throughout a day. These logs are to be kept every day until the disruptions are eliminated or at least reduced to a minimal level. The journal entries can be written down in a book or saved on the computer. Whatever the case, these interruptions must be logged faithfully in order for this method to be successful.
Many people don’t realize how many interruptions they deal with on a daily basis that are taking away from their valuable work time. The phone rings, the email auto-notification beeps, the dog starts barking, the kid starts crying, and the list goes on. There are various interruptions depending on where the individual is working but many of them can be removed therefore offering more productive work time.
For example, if the phone is a problem, an answering machine can be put to use. For those individuals who experience a lot of interruptions via email, they can disable the auto-notification system and set a specific time check their messages. The same goes for other social network tools they are active on. Sometimes there are disruptions that occur that can’t be ignored, but MANY of them can be, at least temporarily. These are interruptions that are taking away from work time and possibly causing unnecessary errors.
An interruption log is so effective because it shows exactly where the disruptions come from and how much time they take. The log allows a person to understand where they need to cut out the distractions. Once these distractions are discovered and eliminated, the time spent at work is much more productive. Imagine being able to reduce the number of hours you have to work, just by limiting the number of interruptions you deal with on a daily basis.
While a person can still be successful at running a business with these ongoing distractions, the majority of entrepreneurs who have succeeded, have done so partly because of effective time management. They keep their business time for work and their personal time for their family or friends. These may overlap occasionally but for the most part, try to keep them separate.
Running a business at home makes it more difficult in most circumstances to control the interruptions. It is essential that not only the entrepreneur understands the importance of limiting interruptions but that the family and friends do as well. They need to know not to call, send messages or disrupt in other ways unless it is an emergency. This helps tremendously in reducing the interruptions. Once this is done and the other forms of distractions are reduced, work can be completed faster and without as many errors.
