How to Generate Publicity for your Unknown Start-up?
You have launched an excellent service or product, but if no one knows about it, you’re going to find garnering sales difficult.
Generating publicity and media buzz is necessary for the success of any start-up. With several new businesses being launched every day, it is crucial that you stand out from the crowd.
Publicity is one of the best ways to spread the word about your business. It’s all about having independent people talk about your business – your recent offerings, services, brands, and innovations.
The question is – how can you get people, journalists, writers or bloggers to talk or write an article about your new unknown start-up?
Here are some options that can help give your start-up some much needed exposure as well as ongoing publicity.
1.Be human
Like everyone else, journalists and bloggers hate being pitched. A great way to get publicity is not to sell your company, your product or your services. You just have to be a human being. Remember that people make purchases from people, and not from cash registers.
2.Tell your story
Most start-ups simply talk about their company history, product features or the services they offer – which does not create much interests at all. What you can do instead is to focus on why your product or service matters, especially to your target audience. When you build your story around the value that people will gain from your offerings, it will be highly relevant and compelling.
3.Be sure you’ve got news to share
A press release sounds like an advertisement and will just go in the trash immediately. No one will write about your start-up just because you exist. You’ve got to stand out. You have to tell the unique aspects about your new business. Know what is newsworthy about it and share that aspect with people.
4.Create relationships
Instead of blindly distributing press releases, get to know people who cover your industry or community. Online sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and blogs make good avenues for research.
And even after they cover your first pitch, continue engaging with them. Send a thank you email and share their posts on your social media networks. Maintain and cultivate the relationship as it is an important factor in your business success.
5.Host an event
Forget launching an old-school news conference. It’s stale and does not create much appeal. Also avoid major conferences when a smaller event is more engaging.
Be more successful by inviting selected groups of industry insiders, journalists and your target customers. They are more likely to talk about the event especially if you have a creative and remarkable story to share.
6.Give something away for free
Everyone loves to receive freebies, such as information, discounts or actual samples. Offering free information or valuable reports to your readers establishes your credibility in the industry. It can spread really fast and becomes viral, especially in social media sites.
When you are giving discount coupons or samples, be sure to tell media sites about it to get more coverage.
7.Get involved in the community
Build your presence. You can join your local chamber of commerce, participate in community trade fairs or become a member of community organizations. You can also attend events, offer to speak at an event or be a sponsor. Offer your time, your products or services.
Publicity lets you spread the message of your products or services and attract potential customers and clients. It helps build your customer base and improve your chances of success.
And as your business grows, obtaining positive press and getting your business featured regularly in different forms of media, brings your business to the attention of every potential customer.
