Work on set goals
Short- and long-term goals are really just to-do lists on a grander scale. Think of them as your monthly and yearly to-do lists. Setting goals is only useful if you then meet those goals. To improve your chances of meeting set goals, ensure that the goals you set are realistic. Create an action plan for achieving each goal, and write it down. Break large goals down into smaller, more manageable ones. When you follow your action plan effectively, reward yourself.
Prioritize tasks
Both your to-do lists and your set goals are essentially an inventory of tasks that need to be completed. These tasks should be grouped into priority categories: urgent, important, chores, maybe, dreams and wishes, etc. The ‘urgent’ category contains tasks that must be completed right away, while the ‘important’ category is those tasks that must be completed within a particular time frame. Both are essential to your business, your family, or you personally. ‘Chores’ are, of course, things you must stay on top of even though you don’t want to, but they are not generally pressing. The ‘maybe’ category contains tasks that aren’t so important and can be completed any time. You can customize your categories to your needs; the important thing is that they indicate decreasing levels of importance. Once you’ve categorized your tasks, it is easier to accomplish them
Manage disruptions and distractions
Disruptions and distractions shift your attention from the task at hand, slowing you down and breaking your concentration. Minimizing distractions can dramatically improve your efficiency. Of course, you can never completely eliminate disruptions, and there will always be unforeseen distractions, but do your best to create a quiet and uninterrupted space and time for work. When you’re working on something important, turn off your phone and don’t check email. Take breaks to walk around and go outside to keep you fresh and focused. You may find that soft music helps you to focus, but for some it’s a distraction, so use what works for you.
