If these scenarios sound familiar, you are one of the many people who tend to procrastinate. Everyone procrastinates at one point or another, however, when it’s a regular habit, it can cause serious setbacks in your business.
For business owners, procrastinating on the important / crucial tasks can cause excess stress. When you put off what needs to be done, you end up facing a higher level of stress when the deadline rolls around. When dealing with tasks we don’t know how to tackle, or simply don’t want to face, we fail to move our business forward and reach our goals.
People have many reasons for procrastinating, the important thing is not the reason (or excuse) but rather to recognize our patterns and get out of them as soon as possible. If we can learn to take a look at the task from a different perspective we can learn to fix this big time management problem.
Common reasons (aka excuses) people procrastinate:
1. No idea how or where to start
This happens a lot for new business owners and entrepreneurs starting a new project. You have the tendency to avoid tasks you feel you lack the skills to complete. Too much to learn, too much to do, or too much to implement leads to overwhelm and in the end, you end up doing nothing.
2. Would prefer to do something else
We all have tasks on our list that we dislike, but are critical to the success of our business. Some dislike creating reports, making cold calls or following up with their suppliers. We tend to delay these unpleasant duties by working on things that we can enjoy more.
3. Fear of failure
Fear of failure often stops people from getting their tasks done. People who fear failure tend to lack confidence in their ability to get the job done successfully. Things can always go wrong, mistakes are going to happen. The key is to not let your mind focus on that – try to view the task as a challenge instead.
4. Need for perfection
Entrepreneurs are often perfectionists. When you have set such a high standard, it’s easy to procrastinate in order to avoid failure (see point #3). Perfectionists also tend to put things off until the situation meets their high standards. “I will start that project when…” Do you tend to wait until things are perfect before you take action? If so, you have wasted precious time accomplishing the unnecessary. Focus on what’s realistic, instead of ideal.
Procrastination is a habit that can be broken. Realizing the reasons why you procrastinate is the first step. Your challenge is to find ways to manage your procrastination.
Remember that your business success is not just about getting things done, it’s about getting the right things done.
