Achieving Greater Focus – It’s All About You
Jeanna Pool, founder of of CATALYST Creative, writes a great e-zine about marketing each month. A few years ago, she shared a list of five great marketing tips. The first tip was “Stop Focusing on You.” She declared it the year of the client and urged business owners to focus totally on the needs of their clients. I think she’s absolutely right, and I also think she is completely wrong. So how can she be both right and wrong you ask?
If you’ve been in business for awhile, have great products and services to offer, yet aren’t getting the results you want, you may be too focused on your clients and not focused enough on yourself. In a previous post, I encouraged you to revisit your vision for your business and ask yourself why you started it in the first place. Now I want you to focus even more on exactly what you want out of your business. Do you want to make more money? If so, how much? Write down a number. Do you want more flexible hours? Write down the exact schedule you’d like to have. Do you want to change the world? Write out specifically how that would look.
Why do you need to do this? Because if you aren’t absolutely clear about what you want out of your business, how can you measure your success? How are you going to help your clients if you aren’t taking care of yourself as well? Maybe you need to be making $150,000 per year to provide your family with the life that you and they want. You want to send your kids to college. You want to retire while you are still active and in good health. Or maybe you just want to make an extra $20,000 per year working part-time while you take care of your children until they start school. Or perhaps your goal is to make a million dollars and have the financial freedom to travel the world. Whatever your ultimate goal is, you won’t reach it unless it is clearly defined.
What you want will shape the future of your business. It will determine who your customers are and how you can help them. If you want to make $5,000,000 in sales, your products and methods are going to be a whole lot different than if you want to make $50,000 in sales. If you only want to work in the afternoons, or if you want to sell your business and retire in five years, that’s going to affect your business decisions as well. So right now, get out a paper and a pen and get ready to write.
In as much detail as possible, answer the question, “What do I want out of my business?” Write as much as you can. Think income, lifestyle, schedule, partners, travel, location, and employees. What exactly do you want? Compare where you are right now to what you really want, and then start narrowing the gap. What can you do right now to make your business work for you?
