Do lean times continue to plague your business? The business environment is increasingly competitive; you may be tempted to go into survival mode and hope that you can make it through. There are opportunities even now and implementing one, or more, of these proven keys to growth may help you not just survive, but actually thrive and prosper.
Key # 1: Manage Forward
Many small and mid-size organizations do not have a coherent performance management system to drive productivity. You have financial results that measure activity, but all those numbers only reflect the past. Changing your use of this data may help you make effective plans that move you forward.
How many sales calls does it take over seven days to generate a customer who pays $1000 per month for your product or service? How many customers at this level do you need over six months to generate $50K in income? Which marketing or sales strategies yield those customers? Once you’ve calculated this, track what you’ve done against what you need to do. Reallocate time and resources as necessary to achieve the goal. Apply this principle to all areas of уоur business; you’ll discover уоu succeed more bу measuring forward than by measuring the раst.
Key #2: Review Processes, Procedures and Expenses; Change if Necessary
One of my clients had a process that took six days, multiple approval steps and the time of several senior managers to approve payments to suppliers on a monthly basis. The cost was significant. We simply asked: “Why does this task take so long?” The implemented change significantly streamlined the process, maintained strong financial control, reduced costs and freed up over 45 hours of managerial time.
Small businesses can apply the same principle. Small business owners often assume responsibility for tasks that can be done more effectively and less expensively by others. Take the time to ask ‘why’ about each job you are doing yourself. Who works with you that can do this and free up some of your time? Ask the question and give an honest answer for every task in which you personally involve yourself. Freeing up even 20 days of your time to manage, market and grow, rather than administer, your business may be worth a $1000 for each day.
This may sound simple, but check your outgoing expenses. Make a list of which expenses are necessary and which are optional. Consider buying used, rather than new, office furniture. Employ a virtual assistant to manage administrative tasks. Government surplus, eBay, and Craigslist can be a source for equipment.
These ideas can save you thousands of dollars in wasted expenditure. How much you keep is just as important as how much you make. Cutting expenses is crucial, but a slash and burn approach is detrimental both long- and short- term. A balanced approach joins sensible cost-cutting with robust growth strategies.
Key # 3: Develop a Coherent Internet Sales and Marketing Strategy
My inbox is inundated with emails promising thousands of dollars from diverse forms of internet marketing strategies. Most of these claims are expensive, patently false and border on the ludicrous. There is a grain of truth; internet marketing is undergoing a revolution.
You probably already know that most of your customers are finding you through an internet search on Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines. A good business strategy includes ways to make you rank hire on search engine results. Keywords and SEO work.
Social Media is another option. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+ and others can all generate business for you. It’s a fact; the big boys (Starbucks, Lowe’s, Virgin Atlantic, Burger King and innumerable others) use Social Media because it works.
Email campaigns with giveaways, webinars and targeted newsletters are also part of this plan. Assertively getting in your customer’s face and drawing attention to your products and services in Cyberspace is increasingly important. Failing to develop a coherent and vigorous internet marketing program is likely to make your business obsolete quite quickly. The good news is internet marketing and sales can be extremely cost efficient.
Key #4: Incentivize Your Team to Own the Dream
Your long-term success depends on уоur ability to instill уоur team with а passion to grow with you and the business. Whether you employ a virtual team through work-for-hire sites or individuals in your physical location, lean times especially require efforts to retain valuable talent.
The best of уоur team will not stay with уоu if thеу sense а gap bеtwееn уоur goals and thеіr legitimate aspirations for а better future for them and their families. Develop an incentive scheme that translates уоur ongoing success іntо matching long-term benefits for уоur team. Transform уоur team from employees іntо success partners.
Think creatively. Rewards don’t have to be expensive; they also don’t have to be unsustainable salary increases. Groupon or Living Social vouchers can be а dynamic wау to incentivize уоur team. It is аbоut sincerely communicating that уоu value the contributions of уоur team members to уоur success.
