Reduce Stress and Avoid Entrepreneurial Burn-out
Starting and running a business is indeed stressful. The stress can come from almost anywhere – daily issues, employees, emails, suppliers, clients, reports, financials, taxes, and much more!
If you can’t handle setbacks, that’s stress. If you’re having a hard time focusing or getting motivated, chances are you’ll get stressed out. It can be when you’re faced with project deadlines, emails and phone calls, delayed deliveries, demanding customers, and several other issues.
The need to create income and keep your business running can really create more stress. Added to this are the expectations from competitors, family and friends.
There is no escaping stress. It is part of almost every job, but it seems that small business owners and entrepreneurs have it the worst! It seems that taking that much-needed rest, getting some relaxation and vacation usually ends up taking a back seat to the business.
You have to reduce your stress levels and recover your health and sanity. Here are ways to help you cope with stress and entrepreneurial burnout:
1. Learn to say “no”
There’s nothing wrong with saying “no.” If your workload is already filled, taking on even just 10 percent more, will feel like having an additional 50 percent workload. This will stress you to the max.
Avoid creating more stress by not taking on more than you can handle. This includes saying no to new activities that don’t fit into your priorities and agenda.
2. Delegate wherever you can
As a business owner, you wear many hats. But this does not mean you have to do everything by yourself. Check which tasks employees can do for you, and make them responsible for it.
When you delegate, you can take a day off or go on a vacation if you have to. This way, you can relax instead of worrying if things are still doing well when you’re away. Trust your employees when you delegate tasks to them. By delegating, you lift a huge weight off your shoulders.
3. Track your time
It is essential to organize your time and track the amount of time you spend on every task. You have to make sure you’re spending your time the best way you can. Through this, you’ll get to know the non-essential tasks that are eating your time and eliminate them. You can also see which tasks can be delegated.
4. Eliminate distractions
All those daily distractions can be overwhelming and stress you out. These distractions are time-wasters that tend to extend your day rather than catching up on what you should have been doing instead. These include interruptions from co-workers, phone calls and messages, procrastination, poor scheduling, socializing, and a lot more.
Find ways to eliminate them or compensate for them.
5. Stay connected with people
Don’t forget that you have family and friends. Maintain your relationships with them to keep your life in balance and be happy. Spend time with them. Meet your friends for lunch or dinner.
6. Spend a few minutes each day exercising
Even if exercising is not your thing, it is a great way to relieve stress. You should spend at least thirty minutes to an hour each day exercising. It doesn’t always have to be running for miles or doing a cardio workout every day. You can try lifting weights or yoga to help relieve stress. If going to the gym is not your forte, you can do brisk walking, jogging, playing with your dog or tinkering in your garden. Do five minute office exercises on YouTube.
When your body is active, you’ll be distracted from work-related stress. It releases those worries, frustrations, pressures and anxieties from your body. Exercising also helps your mind function better and helps you to think more clearly.
7. Take care of yourself
Learn to maintain a balanced professional and personal life. Reward yourself from time to time. Make an effort to give yourself a weekly massage or a vacation.
Don’t forget that running a business is exciting and fulfilling, and its success depends on you to be at your best!
